Life-Sparring Podcast - Round 12: Fabian - Shadowboxing June/July 2021 - Quantified Starch
Life-Sparring Podcast - Round 12: Show Notes
Synopsis:
Shadowboxing rounds are solo episodes, where I, Life-Sparring host Fabian Gruber share “What’s On and Poppin” in my life, what current books provide “Food for Thought,” and what else is going on. No interviews, just a bit of solo rambling and occasionally some awful singing.
For the combined June/July round of Life-Sparring Shadowboxing, singing is back, and it is as bad as ever.
As running is one of my main past times at the moment, “What’s On and Poppin’” covers just another running-related product review. While I do most of my shorter runs without supplementing or hydrating, I wanted to experiment a bit with fuelling on the run. Generation UCAN’s SuperStarch was something I came across in Doctor Peter Attia’s blog. SuperStarch is corn starch that has been modified to provide lasting energy without spiking the blood glucose level. Listen to the show how the first attempts went.
What else was poppin’? I was popping in at Simon Klaiber’s Personal Agility Podcast to talk about the Quantified Self, one of my favorite topics. As Simon podcasts in German, I recap our conversation a bit.
Food for Thought, the book segment of the Podcast, features two shorter novels. Somehow I struggled with my non-fiction books a bit and was craving some easy summer reading. So, after reading and reviewing two John Irving books earlier this year, I complete the hattrick with “The Water-Method Man,” a lovely nonsensical book that, in my opinion, has one major flaw.
The second book I read in the past weeks is Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist.” This is a book that you want to like, but maybe it is the skeptical German in me that prevents me from sharing the enthusiasm for this lovely fairy tale.
Much less optimistic than The Alchemist, but somehow related to alchemy is Zachary Crockett’s The Hustle article “The economics of dollar stores”. It is fascinating and somewhat depressing how companies like Dollar General turn small tickets into massive profits.

About the Life-Sparring Podcast:
Sparring is an important part of martial arts; it is the reality check of your abilities. As Mike Tyson famously said: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." Life-Sparring takes the sparring from the ring into real life. Hear Life-Sparring host Fabian Gruber punching above his weight, interviewing top experts in their respective fields, trying to fight (his own) mediocrity one round at a time.
The Life-Sparring podcast is hosted by Fabian Gruber and produced by Thomas Latter.
Intro and Outro beat is produced by Markezi Producer.
